Scowler

Kraus, D. (2013). Scowler. New York: DeLaCorte.

This is a story about a teenager named Ry Burke, and who wishes for anything to distract him of his memories of his father’s (Marvin), physical and emotional abuse. His father was also an abusive husband. Ry lives with his mother and his little sister in their dead family farm in the middle of nowhere.  Then the ruthless father tries to destroy the family and Ry helps his mother. It is then that Marvin goes to jail. But he escapes from prison when a there is an explosion at the jail.   Ry defends himself by resurrecting imaginary childhood protectors, Mr. Furrington ( a stuffed animal), Jesus Christ (a figurine), and the Scowler (the ugliest toy). These toys are aspects of Ry’s personality in which he discovers that he needs to tap into in order to protect his mother and sister and stop his controlling homicidal father.

This is a dark, tense and well written thriller of a story that is sure to get the reader’s attention. A great book for mature horror readers. This is a book that has been recommended for grades eleven and up. Other books written by this author are Rotters, Zebulon Finc, Volume One: At the Edge of Empire, and Zebulon Finch, Volume Two: Empire Decayed.
