Monster

Myers, W. (1999). Monster. New York: HarperCollins.

story about a sixteen-year old boy named Steve Harmon who is in juvenile detention and on trial for a role in the fatal shooting of a convenient store owner. He is accused of being the lookout for a robbery of a drug store. The owner is shot and killed. As he goes through his trial he is put back into jail where he can hear inmates beaten and raped. He goes through the events up to this point in his life. Steve searches deep into his soul to prove to himself that he is not the monster the prosecutor presents him to be. Could he have been at the wrong place at the wrong time?

A very compelling and disturbing story for grades 7 and up. A story that is good for classroom or group discussions. Most teens can relate to Steve when Steve is caught up in the violent circumstances of an adult world. Other books written by this author include, Bad Boy: A Memoir, Fallen Angels, Sunrise Over Fallujah, Somewhere in the Darkness, and The Glory Field.
