Gabi: A girl in pieces

Quintero, I. (2014). Gabi: A girl in pieces. TX: Cinco Puntos.

This is a story about a sixteen-year old senior girl named Gabi Hernandez who has to deal with her friend Cindy who is pregnant, her best friend Sebastian who gets kicked out by his parents, and her dad who is trying to quit meth and her Tia Bertha who is very religious. She struggles to figure out where she belongs in the world. She feels is not Mexican enough for her family and not white enough for Berkeley. Despite all the pressure all the pressure from her family, culture and society, she manages to get ahead by meeting every challenge with boldness and truthfulness.

A very bold and truthful book for young adults. A book recommended for grades 9 and up. Young adult readers will connect with Gabi to their own fears of college acceptance and Latina identity. Another book written by this author is Ugly Cat and Pablo.
